Valentine's Day for Everybody by nillia Valentine's Day for Everybody by nillia
Anti-Valentine's day sentiments always seemed kinda silly to me, even when I was single. Why do people get so melodramatic about it? It seems like they let the romantic hype get them all worked up. Even when I was single, I liked Valentine's day cuz I liked exchanging valentines with friends and family. I liked celebrating those bonds. And I liked giving/getting candy. >>; But yeah.
Valentine's Day is for everybody, not just romantic couples. So all you unhappy singles out there-- Stop pouting and go give your friends valentines! =D It's theraputic.

This is colored pencil with a little photoshop. ^^ The little girl is based on my sweet little sister, that I love very much. ^^

well i like your positive attitude and sentiiment that its not just about romance i never thought it was because it honestlant be.. chalky hearts do not equal romance in my opinion. my distaste for it is more about how unspecial it makes everything. i do my best to show my love to friends and family and the one i love all year round.. not when everyone else is. so im not pouting and being melodramatic.. im making it special again.

Beautiful work, as i've seen with all of your creations. I agree, the commercialization ruins an otherwise sweet holiday. It really is meant to celebrate love, and sacrifice, since it really is dedicated after a Saint named Valentine that gave his life as a martyr, just people didn't like him preaching about love. I realize this is a very belated comment, but i hope everyone starts to adopt the healthy attitude that you have.

i couldn't agree more with this! i also find it strange that someone, single or not, could hate valentine's day. it's like saying they hate love in general

Yay:love: thanks, thogh I am one of those pouty people:O_o: I do give gift to my friends&family, but, I'll explian why some people don't like it.
#1-they just hate feelings
#2-there too young to understand
#3-(which would be me) don't understand why others can have a sucssesful relationship when all of there's go in the toilet, even thogh they know some of those people won't be together the next day anyway.
on another note I love the picter:D

I need to show my friend this. She gets so depressed on Valentines Day because she thinks no one loves her (she is single). I dont like when she gets like that. I should show her this. Get job on the shading with the pink.

really nice pic and a very thoughtful sentiment but, it is still kinda annoying when most of my friends have someone, and I don't, and there are 3 trillion V-day commercials. I think the multitude of commercials is what is really irritating me this year.

The one thing that bothers me about Valentines (Other than the fact that love has now been turned into a buyable product according to Hallmark which I think everyone is a bit annoyed with) is that people think this is 'the day' to say you love someone. If you love someone in whatever way, you should say it every day, not just because it's the designated day to do so.
But other than that, I think it's a cute holiday. ^_^ I've been alone every Valentines, but I still enjoy it. ....Plus, the candy's awesome.
Kuwaizair Featured By Owner Feb 12, 2006
so you've been alone every valentines day, to had been with somone for 8 valentines days you'd of needed a lover at what age...?
I'm still waiting for my man I can claim as my own.

So true. I couldn't agree more with your sentiments, but I don't care for V-day. It's a commercialized holiday. You shouldn't just celebrate love one day a year. It should be a constant thing. The world would be a better place if people just treated every day like it were Valentine's Day.
ShinkonoKokoro Featured By Owner Feb 11, 2006  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Aww... That's so cute! I love this pic. IT's very well-done and I think you're right, now that I think about it. I guess Valentine's day can be more than just couples. ^^ Great job.
inuzrule Featured By Owner Feb 11, 2006
heh...guess i have kinda been like "Valentine's day is a capalistic venture meant to sell mushy cards and candy with 'i wuv u' on it" ^^;

anyways, i'm sorry for being one of those people...(I'M SORRY! I'LL REFORM!!!!) but i'm just not real into Valentine's day anymore. after fourth grade, you don't really get any cards or candy from your classmates, your friends give out stuff to people they have crushes on, and you stop making cutesy cards in school to give to your family. it becomes an average day, unless you have a significant other...guess who doesn't.

but...i suppose i could make an effort to make this Valentine's day sweet...THE PICTURE INSPIRES MEH!! ^__^

And your right.. even though i'm not single.. I still give some of my friends candy!

Finally!! Someone else GETS it!

Valentine's Day started in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honour Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia.

The lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate. However, one of the customs of the young people was name drawing. On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl's name from the jar and would then be partners for the duration of the festival with the girl whom he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry.

Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II. He and Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs and secretly married couples, and for this kind deed Saint Valentine was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. He suffered martyrdom on the 14th day of February, about the year 270. At that time it was the custom in Rome, a very ancient custom, indeed, to celebrate in the month of February the Lupercalia, feasts in honour of a heathen god. On these occasions, amidst a variety of pagan ceremonies, the names of young women were placed in a box, from which they were drawn by the men as chance directed.

The pastors of the early Christian Church in Rome endeavoured to do away with the pagan element in these feasts by substituting the names of saints for those of maidens. And as the Lupercalia began about the middle of February, the pastors appear to have chosen Saint Valentine's Day for the celebration of this new feaSt. So it seems that the custom of young men choosing maidens for valentines, or saints as patrons for the coming year, arose in this way.
