Prop 8 by nillia Prop 8 by nillia
How I felt as Prop 8 took hold in California.

Now, in New York, we have a chance for a Democrat Senate Majority leader for the first time in decades. Sen. Malcolm Smith is up for majority leader. Because he supports eventually allowing gay marriage (economy is priority, as it should be), 4 democrats are threatening to vote Republican.

These four men are prioritizing gay marriage over every other issue...over everything else their party stands for. They are using the tiebreaker vote as a bargaining chip for their own agenda. That is selfish, petty, and manipulative. It saddens me that such people represent the people.

They also want to create a ballot for banning gay marriage.

I'm worried.

I have a 5 foot india ink coming with a similar theme.
I also want to work on a more hopeful picture about keeping up the effort and hope.

this is a truly exellent piece of art. I would say ''Go Lesbians!'' but I'm a man and straight... oh wait, Go Lesbians!!!
sorry for that, I hope you are free to live as you wish in the near future.

I used to live in California and I remember this. I also remember the "Vote yes for prop. 8" commercials. A lot of them were inaccurate and were filled with scare tactics.

You are so incredibly talented. I'm in complete awe. :) (And, yeah, tolerance. Seriously. I'm from Iowa and we allow gay marriage. I hope they don't take that back.)

California... geez one of the most messed up states... T_T (is from Norcal)
I can't believe how they gave people a right and then stripped it again a few years later with prop 8.

I felt the same way, I mean I'm not old enough to marry, and maybe things wil change by the time I am, but still, I felt really sad when they passed it, like we haven't made enough progress. DD:

I hope things go well in New York.

I still can't understand how so many people can be against gay marriage. Why...? What's wrong with it? Why can't we all marry whoever we love?
I'm ecstatic that recently there has been a flood of states allowing gay marriage. I'm waiting for Maryland, myself.

I do support Prop 8 (I'm not going to bash you, trust me ^^; ), but I DO love this picture!

The colors are beautiful, and you've truly captured the emotions of the two characters!

I am very happy that you are supporting gay marriage, and it also sickens me too to have such selfishness do that to people...I my self am gay and very happy that you are sticking up for what is right.

I do not share the same veiw point as you and hen I say I do not agree with your veiw point, that does not mean that I hate homosexuals, I just do not support the proposition to allow gay marriage. Although, I must say that I am extremly awed by this beautiful piece you have created to represent your emotions. The colors and the emotion within the girls' eyes is breathtaking and you did a lovely job on the explosive background and the reflection of light and heat on their cheeks and hair.
Yeah, I remember that day. I actually live in California.

You wouldn't believe how.... well unbelievable (and of course upsetting) it was to me and my friends that they could do something so unconstitutional.

This picture conveys how many people of the Bay Area (The part of California I live in) felt after hearing the news.
amayawolf Featured By Owner Jan 10, 2009
I felt the exact same way. I live in California and I was devastated when it didn't pass. All of the ads against prop 8 were completely bogus. However I know that we are at least fighting so the people who already got married will be able to be declared legally married, because of ex post facto which is in our constitution. Within ten years I bet it will be legal because of the amount of people in elementary, junior high, and high school currently that accept the idea of gay marriage. So when they get to vote they will most likely vote for gay marriage. Sorry about that rant. Anyways, I really liked your artwork.

This is amazing, as is the message. Great job.

Before I read your description, this feels like two sisters, talking about what will happen when they are put in arranged marriages.

How they shall separate, and whether they shall be happy sharing bed and board with men they do not know or love.
Cervallon Featured By Owner Dec 4, 2008
This is in combination with the title.

Minus the title, it is the face of someone with an unsure future.

I just embellished it according to your title.

I love it, especially your message. Prop 8 is nothing short of a monstrosity.

This is beautiful. And perfectly tailored for what is a sad scenario. I'll be watching for your more hopeful version on a similar theme. Best of luck.

The emotion on the faces of both of the girls, paired with the lighting from the "fire", and the wind blowing their hair really expresses heartbreak and devastation well. The colors and shading are beautiful, even while the message behind the image is painful.
PuppyLivers Featured By Owner Nov 25, 2008  Student General Artist
I stood on street corners protesting the proposition with hundreds of other people.
My heart broke when I heard prop 8 passed. I'm afraid for myself, and for my friends. If basic rights such as the the right of who a person to choose who they marry are being taken away, then what next?

Your piece accurately sums up all the feelings of loss, fear and uncertainty that I and all the rest of the LGBT community here have.

In Florida, we got it even worse. There will be no rights for gays or straights. There will be no common law marriage and we had to take it one step further than anyone else:

Marriage is to be between one man and one woman. That's it. You want rights? Marry someone of the opposite sex.

It's sick.
KairoWeasley1418 Featured By Owner Feb 1, 2009  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Seriouslyyy? That happened down here?

I'm so deprived of daily news. I really hadn't been paying attention. I heard Prop 8 passed but I didn't know that kind of stuff happened down in Florida...
SmileWhenDead Featured By Owner Feb 15, 2009  Hobbyist Digital Artist
We got the amen. 2 which states that marriage is only between a man and a woman which means that we will not have same sex marriage till only God knows when.

There's also no common law marriage for those couples who have lived with one another for over 10 years.

Florida sucks.

I felt the same way when I heard that Prop 8 passed. I cant believe that some of the most "loving" people in america (Ie. Christians and others) could be so hateful.

Why cant anyone share unity with someone they love? It saddens me that they would halt such a beautiful thing as marriage for gay couples.

"It's god's will!" doesn't matter to everyone in America. "It'll ruin the sanctity of marriage in America!" Doesn't make since, as the rate of divorce is already at it's highest in existing married heterosexual couples.

Silly Americans, it's called separation between church and state. That means "what God thinks" shouldn't matter in the consideration and making of laws.

This is the next big movement in civil rights. I hope that Homosexual couples will be able to marry all across America one day.

NamiTheUntamed Featured By Owner Nov 17, 2008
Hey Obama won and he might appoint new judges

Plus prop 22 passed by 61%, it was overturned, prop 8 only passed by 52%, (due to very misleading and deceptive campaigns for it) and there's already a lawsuit in the works against it

don't lose hope =0 I know it doesn't look like it, but we are moving gradually in the right direction...

But you do have a right to be upset about it, after all, it hit a lot of gay Californians pretty hard. To think the ones who passed the ban are still claiming to be victimized...
Mikari-Aoineko Featured By Owner Nov 17, 2008
I can hardly think about this issue without wanting to cry. I can't believe that Prop. 8 was passed and that people are trying to hard to prevent people in love from spending their lives together. It makes me sick. I'd like to think that I come from a country that is better than this, but apparently I was wrong. I promise I will do whatever I can to help gain everyone their basic human rights.
Nukerjsr Featured By Owner Nov 17, 2008
Wow, this is just...really amazing. The color just magnificent as everything is just orange and purple. Especially with the hair and eyes.

I do feel bad for your loss, but there is no way it'll be instant.
